Community documentation of the firewalls and built heritage of the Csarnoknegyed in Józsefváros.
A tűzfal is the rendered, windowless flank of a tenement — one of Budapest's most characteristic sights and among its least protected. A wall can disappear between two walks: demolished, built against, or simply losing its render and its history with it.
That is why the spine of this site is the map: every wall is a place, with its own condition, photographs and story.

Tűzfalon túl is an open community archive of the district's firewalls, sponsored by the Zetareh Platform, which carries the hosting and the software.
It is not the official site of any association and speaks for no one but itself.
Anyone may contribute a photograph, a story or a correction, and everything is reviewed by a person before it appears.

The project's digital archive currently lives on a Facebook page. There the photographs cannot be searched, cannot be linked to individually, have no map, and disappear with the platform. Meta retired the Groups API in 2024, so the material cannot even be exported mechanically — only from the organisers' own files.
So this is not a copy of Facebook: here the place, the photographer and the rights status are data, not a remark inside the text of a post.
Browsing needs nothing. Posting, and managing your own signups, needs a Zetareh People account — this site has no password of its own and no registration.
At sign-in it receives exactly three things: an identifier, a display name and a language. No email address — which is why we ask separately when you sign up for an event. The identifier is specific to this site: the same person carries a different one everywhere else, so these records cannot be joined to anything from elsewhere.
Messages in private spaces are readable by the server. This is not end-to-end encryption, and until it is, we will not claim it is.
